Waste collection restored in Browns Farm and surrounds

The City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate would like to inform residents that arrangements have been made with Law Enforcement to allow for the restoration of waste collection services in Browns Farm and surrounding communities where services were previously suspended as a result of extortion.

As of today, Wednesday, 4 December 2024, waste collection services will be restored to Marcus Garvey-Browns Farm, Lower Crossroads, Samora Machel and Unathi Bester – Philippi.
 
Residents in the affected areas should please take their bins out on the scheduled collection day.
 
Services were suspended on 21 November 2024 after City crews and their security came under fire while emptying bins in the area. There is a growing trend of criminals in this area demanding protection money for the City to provide services to residents.
 
Restoration of services has been made possible by City Law Enforcement who have committed significant capacity to protecting Urban Waste crews for the coming months. It is hoped that this will effectively deter criminals, however residents should be aware that further service delays or disruptions could occur if there is any escalation of threats or violence. If you are affected by delays, please take your bin out each day until it is emptied.
 
‘We thank residents for their understanding and patience while services were temporarily suspended and we are pleased to be able to resume our service delivery. We call on any residents with information that could help bring the perpetrators to justice to please engage with their local SAPS,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
 
Residents should please keep an eye out for further updates as the situation could change at short notice.
